About The Owners

The origin of Velen Winery comes from love for each other and our Mother’s. Rebecca and John met in 2006, in a Texas winery owned by John at the time, Crossroads. It didn’t take long before their friendship turned into love, leading the couple to get married in 2011. Setting down roots in Texas, the couple decided to build a ‘forever home’ in Little Elm, TX, while John stayed on as a winemaker for Crossroads. After the completion of their dream home, John took Becca on a weekend getaway to the PNW for Valentines day. It was in the Yakima Valley [area] that Becca and John fell in love with Zillah. Twelve weeks later, the couple had their belongings all packed to head up for a new start in Zillah, WA. Becca, John and their Aussie, Tex moved everything they owned to a farm house outside of Zillah with plenty of land for grape vines in May 2015. The first vines to be planted were Cabernet, following with Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot. Soon after in May 2017, the building plans for a tasting room/ production area were all finalized and began to make headway.

The name Velen is a bond between John and Becca’s mother’s names Vera and Helen.

Head of Security

When Tex isn’t busy chasing sage rats, and patrolling the vineyard he loves to take a moment to enjoy the fine Pacific North West air. Working hard from dawn till dusk he’ll likely be the first face you see when visiting, and the last when you leave.
